Hammer Toe
What is it?
In the case of Hammer Toes, the toe is bent at the middle joint leading to curling of the toe resembling a hammer. Hammer Toe is most commonly seen in the second toe (often as a result of a bunion on the big toe pushing on the second toe); however it can other toes as well. Painful Corns and Callus often form along the top of the first joint due to it rubbing on shoes.
4 Life Podiatry
Podiatry treatment is usually able to relieve pain and symptom’s of Hammer Toe and can include:
- Foot wear advice
- Prescription of Orthotics to relieve pressure on the hammertoe
- Splints and Straps to help realign the toe
- Removal of Corns and Calluses (if present)
Podiatry treatment aims to relieve pain, but will not straighten or correct the Hammer Toe deformity. If conservative treatment is not successful, then surgery may be recommended to straighten the toe.
