Toe Deformities
The forefoot has four small toes, called phalanges, and 1 large toe, called the hallux or big toe. The phalanges have 3 bones and 3 joints, whereas the big toe has 2 bones and 2 joints. Toe deformities are common problems that result from abnormal positioning of the toe bones. These deformities, however, not only affect the alignment of the bones but also affect the alignment of weight bearing joints such as the ankle, knee and hip.
Toe deformities can be congenital (inherited), or due to other problems resulting from wearing poorly fitted footwear or high heels. The most common toe deformities include (click on the condition for more information):
